The first KitchenAid product was created in 1919. After watching a baker mix bread dough with a metal spoon, Herbert Johnson, an engineer from Ohio, sat down at his drawing board when he got home and designed a mechanical mixer. The mixer was marketed as a professional appliance and became an immediate success.
Inspired by this incredible success, Herbert had another equally ingenious and insightful idea: why not introduce the outstanding performance of the professional mixer to domestic kitchens. And so the H-5 mixer was invented in 1919.
At this point everything was ready for the launch, but they didn’t have a brand name, which was inadvertently invented by the wife of one of Johnson’s company directors. While testing the new stand mixer, she enthusiastically exclaimed, “I don’t care what you call it, it’s the best kitchen aid I’ve ever had!”
The KitchenAid brand name was born and the rest is history... KitchenAid began to apply the same approach to a wide range of major and small appliances – like the first domestic dishwasher invented by KitchenAid in 1949 – which would transform America and cooking.
